Top 5: Ways to decorate a desk

Nothing motivates you quite like a tidy, clean and attractive desk. After all, you spend most of your time there so it might as well be a pleasant place to hangout and it will make you more productive and happier throughout the day.

While there are limitations to how much you can pile onto your desktop – ornate ornaments and foot-high flower arrangements may be a bit much – there are plenty of low-key ways you can decorate your desk and still keep it looking professional.

1. Inspiration/Mood Board

All the creatives have one; you should too.

Get a great fabric-covered pin board or one of kikki.K’s gorgeous white cork boards and cover it in whatever magazine cuttings, fabrics or words that have taken your fancy for the moment.

Your mood board is a constantly evolving project – old pictures will be taken down and replaced by new ones as the year goes on, giving you an ever-changing and inspiring vista right in front of your eyes.

2. Matching accessories

Throw out - or re-gift - the hodgepodge of pencil cups, staplers, pens, in-trays and magazine stands you’ve collected over the years and start again with a co-ordinated set of desk accessories.

Drop in on a specialty stationery store and splurge a bit to get your desk looking great.

Go with a fresh colour scheme, all-matching pens, jars to keep your paperclips and whatnots in, handwritten labels and fresh, crisp notebooks. All of a sudden your desk goes from thrift-store special to chic, put-together and professional.

3. Cable tidies

Bleurgh, cables are the worst. And they’re everywhere! The computer, your phone charger, printers, lamps, USB connectors… Messy cords wrapped around your chair ruin your working mojo and the aesthetic of your desk.

Luckily, more than one company has come out now with incredibly stylish cable tidies that look great and do the job of cleaning up the cords all at once. Cable boxes, colourful clips and even cable turtles (Google that) are out there just waiting to fix your desk up for you.

4. Pot Plants

If you’re going to be indoors all day, the least you can do is enjoy some greenery while you’re there.

Having a small plant on your desk quite literally gives some life to a boring office, and green thumbs even say it boosts your mood and your wellbeing just by having a plant nearby.

It will certainly improve the quality of air you’re breathing every moment of every working day. The oxygen from one little plant will make you more alert and productive.

Plus they look great!

5. Photography

Keep copies of your favourite photos in arty frames on your desk. Your pets, your partner, your besties – they’ll keep you smiling even when you’re having a stressful day.

Rather than just blu-tacking them up on your wall, find some great frames with mattboard inserts to make the photos a special feature. Don’t overdo it – one or two photos is fine, or get yourself a photo cube so you can rotate your fave pics around from day to day.

Implement a few – or all! – of these and watch your colleagues go positively Kermit-green as they covet your workspace, and your boss nod with approval at your attention to detail and newfound motivation at work.
