Take: one long, inviting stretch of virgin sand.
Stir in: a large-ish party of people who enjoy nothing more than warm weather, the squishy crinkling of sand between their toes and a touch of ball sports.
Of course, it doesn’t have to be all about the ball. But for the purposes of this article, we’re going to start with the perennials, the games that have spanned centuries and can be played on sand as easily as grass.
Beach Cricket
If horseracing is the sport of kings, then beach cricket is possibly the Queen Victoria of ball sports – not least because it has reigned (like the estimable aforementioned royal) for, like, forever. It has seen empires and umpires come and go.
What do we need? Well, we’d say you need a bat, a tennis ball, a wicket and some folks who can bat, bowl and field. Once you’ve got that worked out, this game will sort itself out. It’s that kind of pastime. Pretty soon, it will settle into a wonderful lazy afternoon of the tasty and ever-damp tennis ball being pelted into the surf, only to be fought over with much laughter and splashing. Try to keep an accurate tab on the run rate, but don’t be fascist about it.

Beach Golf
Sure, golf is a big payday game – there are handicaps and sand traps to ponder, which is why we think beach golf is perhaps the essential version of the game. You’re perpetually in sand, there’s a wildly unpredictable watercourse surging onto your ‘fairway’ and everyone’s got an umbrella up to keep the sun off. The upside is that you can dig your own holes, fashion a 9-iron out of some old tin cans and then go and bash your tennis ball into your large, crudely dug holes.

Beach Volleyball
A game where men and women are teammates. A game where you could pull off a dynamic aerial move worthy of a skateboarder or ballet dancer. A game where any killer move could still fill your mouth with sand. It’s beach volleyball!
You will need a net, heaps of friends and yes – a ball. It’s all about the hand in this game. The fingers telegraph the necessary moves to your teammates, your hand gestures tell them how great they are at being team players and you need this fabulous paddle-like addition to your upper limbs to propel the ball across the net.
