No matter how hectic life gets or how down you might be, there are a few things in this world guaranteed to put a smile on your face and lift your spirits all at once. Having all these things in your daily life should boost your mood tenfold:

 

1. Good Friends

Good friends are such a soothing balm for what ails you. They know how to cheer you up, take your mind off things and get you laughing. You can tell them anything, getting it off your chest and letting them support you at the same time.

 

You don’t need many friends, in fact – a few really close ones are the people that will make the biggest difference to your life.

 

2. Your morning coffee

Whether it’s the pleasure of switching on your coffee machine and filling the house with the aroma or dropping past your favourite cute barista guy-or-gal for a latte on the way to work, the first coffee of the day is a simple pleasure that won’t set you back more than a few bucks.

 

And even if you’re not a coffee drinker, sipping a morning cup of tea or a hot chocolate can be a relaxing way to prepare for the day. Think of it symbolically, as a small ritual that you can look forward to at the start of each day, a small thing which no one can take away from you

 

3. Hobbies

Maybe you’re into macramé, lawn bowls, rally car driving or ballroom dancing. No judgement here, as long as it makes you happy.

 

Taking up a hobby gives you something to look forward to each week – hobbies are great stress relief, perfect for taking your mind off the less pleasant things in life (work deadlines, I’m looking at you).

 

4. Being kind

Next time you’re having a craptacular day, turn it around by doing a good deed. You can change the entire mood of your own day just by making someone else’s day better.

 

Whether it’s helping an elderly lady across the street, giving your spare change to someone who needs it or volunteering at a soup kitchen, the warm feeling you will get from altruism is a beautiful thing.

 

 

5. Accepting compliments

On the flipside of being kind to strangers, accepting kindness from others with a smile is a surefire way to boost your mood.

 

We so often try and brush compliments off. “Nice top!” Someone might tell us. “This old thing? Oh, I got it on sale years ago.” No! Next time, smile and say thank you. It will boost your mood and better your day immediately.
