Catch the Christmas lights

Every city in every state of Australia should have at least one suburb where it is practically compulsory – in an enjoyable way – to do up your slice of the Aussie Dream with breath-taking lights, sound and even sculpture pertaining to Christmas.

In Sydney, you can check out Penshurst, Lugarno, Bangor and Bonnet Bay in the Sutherland Shire/ St George areas, where for over twenty years now, people have been doing their bit to attract visitors who enjoy lights. It’s a celebration of the joy of a quiet street that turns into a parking lot come Christmas week. You’ll love it.

From Altona to Yallambie, Melbourne has hundreds of homes in contention. In Glen Waverley, there are several homes decked out like the palaces of the Shah, so wonderfully bedecked with lights are they. For though the eastern states of Australia are not blessed with snowy precipitations in the early weeks of summer, you wouldn’t know it here. There’s more fake snow than in Die Hard 2.

Brisbane is not to be outdone either, as suburbs from Loganholme to Burpengary, Kingaroy to Goodna show off their sparkling homes of many colours to large throngs of sightseers, eager to see some Christmas cheer after such a hard year.

Adelaide’s suburbs, from Blair Athol to Morphett Vale, are alive with the lights of Christmas. Many of the good homeowners right across the country also manage to collect for charities into the bargain, making it a doubly good reason to put the kids in the car and hit the road one evening in the lead-up to Christmas.
